A First for Xining Children’s Home!

As a supporter of our Home, you too can celebrate the wedding of Zhong Linjun! She is the first orphan from our Home to get married!

Linjun wasn’t even two years old when her mother fell ill and died. Tragically, her father was killed in a traffic accident when she was about 12, so Linjun was admitted to our Home.

Because she was a normal and able child, Linjun was the first to live in our Small Group Home. She was given the privilege of being an elder sister to the little children. This was obviously a helpful move because she grew up to be a happy young woman who integrated well into society.
When she came of age she did her paid service in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and that is where she met Jie Shubin, her future husband. They have both left the army now.

Mr Jie works with the Qinghai Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau, and when Linjun terminated her service with the army, the government assigned her a job with Qinghai Pharmaceutical Factory. The staff at the Home helped them find their new home together.

They are both 23 years old.Linjun is still very attached to the Children’s Home, and to the staff, especially Mr Toi, the house father in the Small Group Home, and to Madam Li, the Administrator, who organised and hosted this very first wedding party in honour of the beautiful child given into our care as an orphan.

We pray that Linjun’s wedding on May 1 was just the start of a new life of joy as she builds a home of her own!
I feel like my own daughter has gotten married and perhaps, may be, I will be a grandma soon!

Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary Values Our Work!

I had a strange experience a few days ago. For the first time, I found myself sitting with a small group of leaders of Hong Kong charities in Government House having lunch with the Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Government, Mr Henry Tang!

I sat there thinking how strange it was that only 16 years ago I was sitting in a tin shed with a leaking roof on the roof-top of the building which Christian Action now occupies. When it rained, my chair was always wet! That shed was my office when I was employed as the Vietnamese Boat People Project Manager for Hong Kong Christian Aid to Refugees in 1992. I was appointed Executive Director six months later, and the organisation became known as Christian Action in 1994.

Over the last 16 years we have been firmly committed to the people of Hong Kong. We serve the world’s displaced right here in our midst including asylum seekers and refugees, domestic migrant workers from Indonesia, ethnic minorities from Nepal, cross-border families and new arrivals from China, just to name a few. What often surprises those who don’t know about our programs is the scale of our operations in Hong Kong. Christian Action has been blest and has become one of Hong Kong’s largest providers of retraining programs for locals over the years. In a typical year for example, we conduct almost 700 classes which are attended by over 14,000 retrainees! The courses are for those who are struggling with the challenges presented by this economy.

Mr Tang wants to be in touch with charities, and I was glad to be at the lunch to speak in support of agencies who don’t receive subventions from the Government. I had the opportunity to answer questions about how Christian Action, one of only two organizations at the gathering that does not receive such government underwriting, has been able to implement so many essential projects.

I asked the Chief Secretary for the Government’s help in serving these people. Mr Tang was most sympathetic and said that the Government wants to see charities survive because our work is valued. This made me happy that I was invited to dine at Government house!

Giving Everyone A Fair Chance

Welcome! Last week I promised to share with you a letter written by Ronald Wee, who wrote to generous friends about Xiao Shan just after he visited our work in Qinghai. Here’s part of Ronald’s letter (shared with permission):

“I visited the Orphanage home set up by Christian Action more than 12 years ago. It was very touching and unbelievable that the Orphanage is the only children’s home in Xining to take in abandoned babies. About 90% of the children there are not only abandoned but also handicapped, so I can see why their parents abandoned them as most cannot afford or don’t know how to take care of them.

Christian Action not only takes in all these babies, regardless of their handicap problems, and takes care of them with proper medical equipment, and makes sure that EVERY ONE of them has a fair chance to grow up as a normal person.

Christian Action will arrange for some of the babies with slight handicaps to be adopted by parents locally OR overseas. Over 100 children have been adopted by parents in western countries (sad to say NO asia country) since the starting of the Orphanage.

I asked what if some of the children I saw could not grow up to be a normal child, what can the home do for them when they grow up? The answer from Joyce (a Christian Action staff member, who is also the vice head of the home) WITHOUT any hesitation was: “Oh, then we will take care of them till their last day of life….”

I have to say even though I am not a Christian, I really really respect them with their determination and love they have for the children……”

I’m sure you are encouraged that your financial and prayerful support has resulted in others appreciating what we are doing for these vulnerable children.

TWO Good Ears!

SURPRISE! Here’s some fabulous news for you!

Last Tuesday, May 5, Xiao Shan was admitted to Union Hospital at 7am to receive her SECOND cochlear implant!! Professor van Hasselt and Professor Tong began the surgical procedure at about 9:30am and finished around midday. Both surgeons said the operation went well, with the implant fitting well into the cochlea, just like the first one. Xiao Shan returned to the Home of Loving Faithfulness late that day.

Our staff member, Natalie Shiu, who was with Xiao Shan right after the surgery said, ‘Xiao Shan was calm and tough; she did not cry a lot. She is a real fighter in how she puts up with her pain and fear’. I, too, can testify to Xiao Shan’s pluckiness: I visited her at 7 that evening and she was already up and playing!

You must be wondering how it’s possible that just a week ago I told you we needed HK$88,000 for a second cochlear implant - and this week I’m telling you that this unbelievable procedure has already been done. With God, nothing is impossible!

And God has a great sense of humour! Xiao Shan’s left cochlear implant was funded by a group of Malaysians and an Indonesian, who were co-ordinated by Mr KH Ng, and now her right cochlea implant has been funded by a group of Singaporeans! Don’t you think this is a wonderful lesson for us that when people and nations are united in goals that will help the most vulnerable in our society a great deal can be done? Jesus always had a heart for those in need and especially for those who had no one else to care for them.

The Singaporean who organised the fundraising for Xiao Shan is Ronald Wee. He visited Qinghai on behalf of the Jurong Rotary Club, Singapore and saw our work there and then we told him about Xiao Shan, so he wrote to some of his friends about this beautiful girl. Next week I will show you Ronald’s letter. You will be very encouraged because you are one of the faithful people who pray and support this work and we want you to share in what you have helped us to achieve in Qinghai.

Your Great Work!

For over ten years we have been serving children by building schools, clinics and homes for the rural poor on Qinghai province’s Tibetan Plateau. We have worked especially hard for abandoned, orphaned and handicapped children. Christian Action does everything from arranging surgeries, to co-managing orphanages and the province’s first and only Children’s Rehab Center for the handicapped. We have been blessed to see our children adopted and placed in foster families and all of this is thanks to supporters like you. Thank you !

Last week I had a surprising meeting with two consultants who learned of Christian Action’s work for the first time after hearing from their friend, Jack Yeung, about the course we ran for our staff, called Character First.

One of them is well-known in Hong Kong as an expert in helping corporations to train and encourage very senior staff. We discussed Character First, but for me the most uplifting part of our meeting was that they were convinced we are doing God’s work. They were so impressed that we should bother going to such a remote place as Qinghai to serve the poorest of the poor! In fact one of them said that our work has inspired him to start serving a specific group of children in need in Hong Kong that God had been prompting him to serve ! He said jokingly that he has been depressed about the economic outlook but what we are doing in China lit up his day!

They also said they were impressed that Christian Action has been doing this work faithfully and without fan fare for 12 years. This is an encouraging compliment from someone who advises CEO’s of large corporations and was himself a ‘big shot’ in a very well known multinational company.

It’s also humbling that he has offered to be an advisor on the materials we develop for use when training the staff of corporations in Hong Kong. He also offered a wonderful solution for continuing our own internal character development for staff . This will be an enormous help to Christian Action.

Doing Something Unusual

One good ear !

Good morning again and I hope it’s an excellent week for you!

Someone asked me about other deaf children in our orphanage after I shared the news about giving 3-year-old Xiao Shan a cochlear implant (See Xiao Shan’s Story). I’m very sorry to tell you that although there are four other deaf children in our orphanage, they are considerably older and are all mentally challenged - making them incapable of learning to process speech. However, we are giving them what such children need more than anything else - tender loving care.

Xiao Shan, who received the implant in early March, is doing well. Because her nerve has not functioned since she was born, it takes time to enhance the hearing. Tuning and adjusting the frequency of the receiver of the cochlear is an ongoing process.

Sue, who has been caring for her at the Home of Loving Faithfulness,has been communicating well with Xiao Shan using sign language for day to day things, including ‘names’ of people - and the pet dog at the home!

It’s probably too much to expect of a 3 year old to understand what’s going on because this is a complicated issue, but Sue is trying to increase her knowledge gradually and sensitively.

Xiao Shan has the potential to live a normal life and I feel very deeply that since she is mentally capable, we should make every effort to give her two cochlear implants. With these, she will have close to normal hearing and a good sense of direction.

I am told that providing such a child with two cochlear implants will be very unusual in China. My thinking is that it would not be unusual for people who love children!

With the generous offer of free surgery and hospital care, please pray with me that we can raise the money to also offer Xiao Shan another implant, which each of us would want to give to our own children, if they were in her situation. We need HK$88,000, which seems a lot for a small piece of technology, but it will make a huge difference in the life of this beautiful child.

Where to now?

You may remember that on March 15, I told you about a proposal I submitted to Qinghai’s Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in January 2008, which is now helping poor herdsmen and farmers get medical assistance.
Another proposal, which was accepted, was that provisional care needed to be provided for those who are no longer children at our Children’s Homes. It is the law that they should leave the orphanage at the age of 18. We agree that for their sakes, these young adults should leave the children’s home, but where will they go? These adolescents, who are just starting to live independent lives, need to have the bare essentials in place. At the very least they may need housing, vocational training, or tertiary education. With these provisions in place, the children are now more likely to find a stable job and we can happily let them go off to begin living an independent life.
Reporters from CCTV were very interested in this unique proposal. They went to the Children’s Home and did an excellent job of reporting on Christian Action’s work with the government. Parts of the media interview with the Director of the Home were aired, and there was extensive news footage of life in the Home. Viewers would have been delighted as they saw the happy children in a clean, modern and bright environment. Most of the children are disabled.
It’s a wonderful sign of progress that people are now interested in seeing that the lives of the poorest, most disadvantaged members of society should be improved. I personally find this extremely encouraging.
Throughout the past decade we have consulted with the government on everything from co-managing the Children’s Home to the construction of a state of the art Children’s Rehabilitation Center in that extremely remote, under served province. We have built expertise among their staff and most importantly, orphaned and handicapped children are benefiting. Character First

Hi - and I hope you have had a wonderful celebration over the Easter weekend!
Last week was short but busy for us at Christian Action. For the first time, we ran an established program called ‘Character First.’ This is a two-day course with teaching, workshops, times of sharing, etc - all aimed at distilling 49 good character traits such as tolerance, patience, loyalty and so on. While it is not ‘religious’, it is based on the biblical principles of learning how to be good people.
The two trainers who came from Malaysia have accreditation in running this course, but because they are friends of mine they didn’t charge Christian Action any fees.
We believe the course will not only result in better service as we work together, but will also extend into all areas of our lives, showing us how to be better parents, better husbands, wives, friends, and so on.
Management staff will pass these principles on to the staff in their own departments, not only by their words, but particularly by their own example.
Of course this means that I too must set an example of someone who has good character traits! I find that very scary, so if you are a praying person, please pray for me!
My dream is to also establish this kind of training in our orphanages, so that all the children in our care learn to develop these excellent character traits while they are still very young. I’m sure you will agree that the world would be a better place even if we all had only two of those excellent character traits - patience and tolerance!

She can hear!

Huge news! A deaf little three-year-old girl, abandoned on the grounds of our orphanage in Xinging can now hear! Music, birds, conversation… she is now in a new and wonderful world of opportunity. One that I have always taken from granted, and probably will continue to. Yet, I am still in shock and grinning from ear-to-ear one-week after watching Xiao Shan’s reactions to hearing for the first time…

In my earlier blog entries I explained the miracle of how little Xiao Shan came to be in Hong Kong (you can find earlier stories under ‘Archives’ In the right column). She’s had a ‘bionic ear’ implanted in one ear and last week it was turned on the very first time.

Last week I had just returned from asking groups in Australia to help the abandoned children in our orphanages. I flew back to Hong Kong the night before Xiao Shan’s big day. I was so nervous that I couldn’t sleep ! I was nervous for her. What would it be like for her? How would she react? I was also nervous for me - what words should I say to Xiao Shan? Would I fail to hear my alarm clock because of jet lag ? I thanked God for all the people who had made this miracle happen.

Over my years as Christian Action’s Executive Director I’ve frequently been asked by people “how can I help your children?” Xiao Shan’s miraculous story is one answer. It’s the story of a chain of individuals, who independent of one another made a commitment to take action. One example is Dr Gordon Soo, who made use of his contacts. Without his persistence we could not have been connected to the Hear Talk Foundation medical team or the Union Hospital Charitable Outreach Programme. All of these actions together resulted in changing one precious little girl’s life forever.

Thankfully for me my alarm clock did wake me up last Monday morning and I witnessed Xiao Shan’s surprised reaction to sound. When the cochlear implant was turned on I said “I love you !” . Of course, she couldn’t understand me. Learning speech and language will take years but once again there are commited and experienced individuals who have graciously come forward to help. When the implant was turned on, the volume was low. It will be increased gradually. Xiao Shan is progressing wonderfully and I promise to keep you updated.

I still want to raise funds for a cochlear implant for Xiao Shan’s other ear, as well as help all the other needy children in our orphanages. Heroes

The Chinese Christian Church of Milsons Point, Sydney, Australia is made up of heroes - but they would probably tell you the real heroes are the children and foster parents pictured above. Each smiling adult is a native of Xining city, Qinghai province, and is a foster parent to one or more of our children. Fostering children, let alone handicapped children in a remote province like Qinghai, is a daily struggle. Yet for five years this Australian Church has done their all to make it just a little easier.

Last week I got to visit the Chinese Christian Church in Sydney for the very first time. What a wonderful experience ! The reason for my Australia trip was to spread the word about the abandoned children we serve and seek others to partner with us. In serving orphans this church has not only been sending volunteers to China and helping foster parents, but was now helping me get the word out in Australia !

There are many fabulous things that came out of the trip. I was touched by the generous, kind and committed service from everyone at the church. I was also moved when catching up with friends and my old pastor from my days in Liverpool, Charles Cheung, all of whom expressed a sincere interest in the children. In addition it was so satisfying to meet with representatives from the Cochlear company and thank them personally for their generosity. It is because of their innovative work and generosity that little three-year old Xiao Shan, will be able to enjoy the gift of hearing for the rest of her life.

What began as a dream twelve years ago in which God called Christian Action to help abandoned babies in a remote corner of China, has now grown into an exciting worldwide linking of caring people ! 您好了！

•放棄要求農村患者支付治療提前。此前，患者需要支付的前期然後等待償還，這是很少的窮人可以負擔得起。

•降低醫療費用的比例，農村病人必須支付！ 這真是美妙如何上帝使我們能夠幫助窮人和她們的孩子。

姍姍的故事
